FAQs
What is an Italian coffee maker, Greek coffee maker, or moka pot?
An Italian coffee maker or moka pot is a type of domestic coffee maker that produces an intense, aromatic coffee similar to espresso. Its main parts are: a lower reservoir for water, a conical filter for ground coffee,
a filter and silicone gasket that hold the coffee, an upper reservoir where the coffee is collected, and a pressure valve that prevents overpressure.
What sizes are available?
The size of Italian coffee makers is expressed in “cups” equivalent to an espresso (50-60 ml). Magefesa coffee makers are available in sizes from 1 to 12 cups.
Which material is more recommended, aluminum or stainless steel?
The choice of coffee maker material depends on taste and budget: aluminum is lightweight, heats up quickly, and is usually more economical; stainless steel is durable, corrosion-resistant, does not alter flavors, and many models work on induction cooktops.
Are they compatible with all types of stoves?
Not necessarily, although most of our stainless steel models are compatible with all types of stoves, and some of the aluminum models are as well. Visit our website to see the specific features of each model.
Can I use regular ground coffee or does it need to be specially ground?
For Italian coffee makers (moka or greca), medium-fine ground coffee is recommended: if it is too fine, like espresso, it will clog the filter; if it is too coarse, like for a French press, the coffee will be watery.
How do you make coffee correctly?
Making coffee in an Italian coffee maker (moka or greca) is simple: fill the base with cold water up to the safety valve and add ground coffee to the filter, leveling it gently without pressing down. Place the
filter with coffee in the water tank and screw on the top, ensuring a tight seal without forcing it. Place the coffee maker on high heat, and when the coffee begins to flow, reduce the heat to medium-low.
Wait for all the coffee to rise, remove from heat, stir with a teaspoon, and serve.
How do you clean an Italian coffee maker?
Cleaning an Italian coffee maker thoroughly is key to maintaining its flavor and durability: disassemble the three parts (base, filter, and upper reservoir), wash with hot water, mild soap, and a soft sponge, check that the safety valve is free of debris, dry the parts thoroughly before reassembling and storing. Aluminum coffee makers should not be washed in the dishwasher.
What should I do if the coffee tastes bitter or weak?
If the coffee from your Italian coffee maker tastes bitter or weak, it is usually due to the grind, amount of coffee, temperature, or brewing time. To fix this: use a medium-fine grind, heat over medium-low heat, serve immediately after brewing, use fresh coffee, clean the coffee maker regularly, and adjust the amount and type of coffee until you find the ideal flavor.
Can it be used every day without any problems?
Yes, Magefesa Italian coffee makers are designed for everyday domestic use. Follow our basic recommendations to keep it in good condition and you will be able to enjoy it for many years.
